Removing a Door Knob

June 12th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Here’s the best way to take off a doorknob.

What you will need:

-Philips screwdriver

-Zipper plastic baggie

Place the plastic baggie over the doorknob to protect the finish.  Use the screwdriver to unscrew the knob.  It is easiest to get it started enough so your fingers can fit in and then unscrew the rest by hand.  It will go a lot faster.  Place the screws in the baggie.

Pull apart on the front and back of doorknob and it should come right apart.  Next unscrew the screws on the side of the door that hold the locking mechanism in.  Place all these pieces in the baggie.

Unscrew the screws for the strike plate on the door frame.  The door frame may be notched out to fit the strike plate flush with the wood.  If it is you may need to use your screw driver to pry it off.  Put these pieces in the baggie.

All done!  Don’t throw the old knobs away.  You can sell them in a yard sale or donate them to charity as long as they are in nice shape.

Up next…installing the new door knobs.
