Replacing Doorknobs

June 4th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Changing doorknobs in your house is a fairly inexpensive way to update the look.

Here are some tips to get you started on this project even before you head out shopping.  You will want to write everything down and take it with you on your shopping trip.

1.       Count how many locking (for bathroom and bedroom) and how many unlocking (for closet) knobs you will need.

2.      If you are switching to a new finish (ex. brass to brushed nickel) you will need to replace the hinges so they match.  Measure the hinge length and width.  There are many different sizes.

3.      Trace both sides of the hinge so you have a visual of the shape.  The edges of a hinge vary from a curve to being square.  Both sides of the hinge are not necessarily the same shape.

4.      Take into account that each door will need 3 hinges and 3 sets of screws.  This adds up quickly and can actually be more than the doorknob itself.

5.      Don’t forget the door stoppers on the back side of the door.  You want to make sure the finish matches the new knobs.

Head out to the store with your list and start pricing.  This is an easy project to do a few at a time as your budget will allow.  Next up….Taking off the old doorknob and hinges.
