Hello all!
As I was presented with the opportunity to blog, I spent a lot of time trying to decide what I should write about. I suppose everyone who ventures out into blog-world struggles with that. At the end of the day, maybe it doesn’t matter so much who reads … maybe it’s just a means to get your thoughts out of your head and on to the ‘paper’ and if you can glean a little insight from the outside world then that’s just a bonus.
So who am I you ask? My name is Abby, I’m 24 and I’m in debt.
Before you jump to conclusions, no my closet is not full of Manolos and I don’t wear a von Furstenburg wrap dress to work everyday. The bulk of my debt is tied to two 8.5″ x 11″ pieces of paper that sit in my closet - my bachelors degree and masters degree. That’s not to say I haven’t done my share of supporting the retail sector over the years, but at least that is only a minor chunk of what I’m dealing with. Unfortunately, designer lust aside, I do struggle with shopping - it’s become an outlet for me over the years and is often what I want to do when I have a bad day. I’ve always been a gal with a nose for a bargain, but I’m slowly realizing that a bargain is only truly one if you can afford it.
So I’m surrounded by nice things but still feeling like I’m drowning in debt. Nice things are pretty and enjoyable, but if they were bought on credit they do nothing but keep you tied down and trapped.
A gilded cage may be lovely to look at, but at the end of the day you’re still trapped.
This is the beginning of my adventure to pay off my debt - and maybe pick the lock on my cage. Stay tuned!

I look forward to reading more! I also have a huge debt tied to two degrees
It can seem so overwhelming sometimes, especially when you don’t have the kind of job that you hoped those degrees would bring
I too love bargains, but I have also had to cut back a lot and realize that just b/c something is a good deal doesn’t mean I should buy it, especially if we don’t NEED it.
