Do Your Kids Eat?

May 13th, 2008 · 1 Comment

On Sunday, my mother had about 30 people for Brunch.  Food choices included Salmon, Ham, Pancakes, Eggs, Salads, Desserts, Breakfast Meats, etc.  Typical Brunch Food.  In attendance were about 10 kids, 2 of which are mine.  My kids are great eaters, I never have to fight with them to eat, they know it is not a choice.  They also know the rule of my table is you have to try it!  It is ok if you do not like it, however, you must try it.  These are the same rules we grew up with.

I could not believe that so many of the other kids refused to eat!  The menu was basic, the food was not strange, these kids just wouldn’t eat.  Not only did they not eat, the parents didn’t make them.  I know that you pick and choose your battles, however, two of the moms just stated that there kids never eat, they only like chicken fingers or grilled cheese, are you kidding me!  In my opinion if that is all your offer them, that is what they like, however, why not offer them something decent, with nutritional value?  It is amazing to me that with all the information we have these days, about childhood obesity and the values of healthy food that parents are not more careful about what they choose to offer there kids.

So, to make my point, I went yesterday and bought “The Sneaky Chef” Cookbook.  If you are not familiar it has recipes on how to hide good food in the things that kids eat.  Our Father’s Day Brunch is going to have veggies in the chocolate cupcakes and cauliflower in the mashed potatoes.  After the kids eat the food I will let the relatives know what their kids just ate.  Hopefully, they will consider trying the same.  As for me, my point will be made and I have to accept the fact that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink!

That is totally a pet peeve of mine too! There is nothing more frustrating then making a nice spread of food and then having kids refuse to eat b/c it is “too weird” or “looks nasty” (as my nephew is so fond of saying) b/c it’s not hotdogs or chicken fingers! And then to have the parents stand by and approve of the behavior!!

I totally agree with you, if you indulge your kids by providing them the same kids foods over and over, then you are not helping the situation and you certainly aren’t doing them any favors. Everyone needs a varied diet and certainly not one filled with processed foods! Ok, thanks for letting me vent :)
