I have just finished reading Michael Pollan’s book ” In Defense of Food- An Eater’s Manifesto.” This book has made me rethink a lot of my food choices. Or the lack of choices. Pollan talks a lot about the fact that American’s eat a lot of food like substances.
Thinking about food like substances, I read the ingredients on the non-dairy coffee creamer I use everyday. Oh my goodness, not a single ingredient I can pronounce, with the exception of corn syrup solids. And we all know how healthy corn syrup is!
In Defense of Food is divided into three parts. But the three sentences written on the front of the book are good advice to take. Even if you don’t read the book. Pollan’s advice - “Eat Food. Not too Much. Mostly Plants. ”
Pollan takes on a lot of the commonly accepted advice from nutritionist. And in fact believes we have moved from eating food to eating nutrients. Pollan goes into detail about the rise of “The Age of Nutritionism.” Which is the title of the first part of the book.
If you are interested in health, food, the environment, or eating organic I would definitely recommend this book. If you enjoy going to the grocery store and not thinking about what you put in your cart– do not read this book. Grocery shopping will never be the same again.

I have to check this out! I try to buy fresh produce and meats. I have limited my trips to the grocery store and if I can’t pronounce the ingredients I try not to buy it. It’s tough with kids and all the advertising they gear toward them, though!
