The Simple Life

April 15th, 2008 · 2 Comments

No not the Paris and Nicole show. Far from it. Lately, I’ve been trying to get back to the simple life of food. Due to a book I am reading (more on that when I finish the book)I am trying to buy and eat more simple foods. Simple foods defined as foods with few ingredients. Or foods that are the only ingredient. Fruits and vegetables that are fresh or frozen and the ingredient list reads– broccoli. Not broccoli plus forty-five words I cannot pronounce. And meat that is just that beef, pork, chicken. Not processed.

Over Easter weekend my boyfriend read the book ” In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan. My boyfriend started talking about the book and the findings in it. And we have both begun to look at the ingredient list a lot more carefully when we grocery shop. I have even opted a few times to buy a slightly more expensive version with fewer (and pronounceable) ingredients versus the slightly less expensive and larger (and unpronounceable) ingredient list. Although on several occasions the fewer ingredients included also makes the price less. And in this case it is definitely not worth what you are paying to get more ingredients!

Since I have been paying attention to the simpler and more basic ingredient list, I am finding that food tastes much better. I am enjoying cooking more because the food is satisfying. I am spending less money eating out and not spending that much more at the grocery store.

Off to finish the book “In Defense of Food.” I will let you know how it ends.

I shop and cook the same way. If you have a local produce stand, you can usually save a good amount on your fruits and vegetables. And they are also usually better quality than in the supermarket. I frequent the butcher and produce stand at least once a week. I may go to a grocery store once or twice a month.
