T-Ball & The “Draft”

April 15th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Who would have thought that coaching t-ball could have been so cut throat?  When my now 8 year old son played 4 yrs ago it wasn’t this bad.  I volunteered to coach my 5 yr old daughter’s team this year since they needed help.  I remember back when my husband coached our son most of the rules, including no players and only the head coach must show up for draft night.

So Wednesday evening rolls around and I rush from my son’s Lacrosse practice to get over to the draft.  I walk in and it’s no surprise that I am the only female coach.  What was a surprise is there were 7 men and myself.  Well that’s 8 total and that doesn’t add up to the 6 t-ball teams.  No some men take it so serious that the head coach has his assistant come to the draft, to help with a drafting strategy.  Um, ok?  Did we not get the same list of rules? I’m sure we did, so that must mean that they think we’re taking these kids to the pros.  Again I know how the draft works so I was quite amused when the commissioner comes in and says “Ok guys, there aren’t as many girls so were just going to go around the room and start picking a girl until we all have the same amount and their all gone”.  I’m sure I had a huge smile on my face as I looked over at the group of 4 men who were a little shocked at how we were starting off.  We finish with the girls and then figure out who has any returning players (I had two).  Now the sheets we have in front of us have the kids name, address, age and phone number.  Considering you have to be 5 by the end of April makes all these kids pretty close in age.  What these guys thought they were going to do is beyond me.  Once we all have the same amount we just went around in a circle picking names off the list to add to our roster.  When we were done he asked if anyone needed to switch players around for coaching reasons (their parents were willing to help coach), no one spoke so he finished up.  He gave us a key for the shed with all the equipment, our rules, scorebooks and miscellaneous papers and said see you on opening day.  As a mother of 3 who’s been around enough sports I really got a kick out of these 4 men because it was quite obvious that this was their first child and their first year at playing t-ball.  This should make for an interesting season, I’m just thankful that there are only 8 games.

Goodness. Whatever happened to neighborhood kids all joining a team and playing together. I don’t get these new parents with their drafts and complicated other things. Sounds like everything turned out well for you.

I can’t believe how seriously these parents take the young kids sports! Our town is so crazy, there are often verbal fights throughout the neighborhood about whose kid is better or whatever. Whatever happened to team sports, learning sportsmanship and just having fun! These parents need to relax!
