Fall Trends: The Red Lip

by cate on September 20, 2010

While the focus of fashion and beauty this week in New York City is looking ahead to Spring 2011, the store fronts were showcasing Fall 2010 and what is hot for this year.  I enjoy a good store display like any other normal girl but there was just something special about the Sephora store front in Times Square showcasing this fall’s hotest beauty trend: the red lip. I was mesmerized for three whole days. Each time I walked by a Sephora (which was basically every couple of blocks there), I had to pause and take in the display. I often wondered if I could pull off the red lip or if I’d have to settle for some pink or burgendy lip – what Mike and I call the almost.

For most of the weekend I was scared. Scared of the new and different. The red lip hasn’t made its way down to Houston and even if it did I just didn’t know if I could pull it off. I mean it has been years since the smokey eye was introduced to the world and I am still trying to master the darn thing. My mastery of the black eye is another whole story. So you can see my anxiety over this bright, red lip trend.

I finally found my courage on Sunday. I just couldn’t take it any more and I couldn’t stand the thought of looking in yet another handbag department at a department store (Sorry Mikki). So at Bloomingdales I escaped from my friend. I settled on the Chanel counter for no other reason than that I was in New York and while I couldn’t afford a Chanel bag or suit just yet I could afford a tube of lipstick. I gathered my courage and found a 20-something beauty artist and told her what I was after and that I was nervous but wanted to give a red lip a try. She was fantastic and of course found the perfect shade. After I settled down my nerves I decided to embark on other fall trends and asked her about fall colors and trends. In the end we somehow managed to take off all of my makeup sans mascara and redo everything for a fresh fall look. I even received a compliment on my current makeup – she didn’t want to take it off because it looked so good – and a free makeup application lesson. An added bonus was that there was no sales pressure to buy certain things or to spend a certain amount. I am officially in love with Chanel, Bloomingdales, and the new red lip!

So what did I end up with?

Glad you asked. To go with my pale skin, blue eyes, and strawberry blonde hair, I bought the following:
Rouge AQUA CRAYON in Rouge

blushJoues Contraste Powder Blush in Tempting Beige
