If you’ve been following some of my previous posts you might recall that my boyfriend of 2.5 years and I have begun to discuss seriously marriage and all that goes with it. So in the process we’ve been thinking and trying to get our finances and insurance on the same page as much as possible. So far we are applying for similar credit cards so that we can “link” them once we are married and we are now working on insurance. We can’t really do anything about health or life insurance since we are not married but we are trying to get our auto insurance and renter’s insurance on the same page to ease this transition. I hate shopping for grown up things like insurance but luckily shopping for auto insurance online makes things easier because you don’t have to speak to anyone and sound like an idiot (I really hate when I do that). Luckily most sites have a FAQ section that seems to be helping us out to figure out what kind of coverage we need and how to link it when the time comes. I wish more things were this easy. I’m hoping everything else goes this way but I know it probably won’t. What other things should we be thinking about?

Joint checking account? I don’t know how you feel about joining finances, but I know it’s something that can be used for proof in some cases of “domestic partnership.”
I recommend having a joint account of some kind. You don’t have to combine all of your finances just yet, but having one account where the rent gets paid from and a few other basic bills really helps you get on the same page. Can’t wait for the big announcement!
