Botox for Migraines?

April 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Back when I was living in my sorority house in college I had a four person room which proved to be pretty interesting sometimes. One of my roomies at the time suffered from terrible migraines. I never knew whether she was putting on a show for sympathy or if in fact they were real. I think about half were and half weren’t. I’m sure if you asked one of the others in the room they’d say all but that’s another story for another day.

About a month ago my mother experienced what the doctor’s thought was a strong migraine. She was out walking the family dog when all the sudden everything went white on her. Luckily the first guess of a stroke was ruled out by some tests and the migraine seems to be the culprit since she’s had them before off and on. In doing some research for my own benefit to learn about migraines, symptoms, and onset of when and how you can get them. The most common “treatment” is taking some tylenol and going to sleep it off. Well that would ruin my day!

I did find an interesting website though that has started using Botox for migraines as a treatment. Botox allows the muscles which are injected (normally the neck) to relax instead of spasm (common cause of migraine headaches) which in turn decreases the tension in your head and keeps migraines at bay. Treatments normally last 3 months and sometimes longer. I think if this becomes an ongoing issue for my mom I’ll suggest giving Botox a shot.
