I often find myself wondering what is in a name. You see my parents were firm believers in calling me and my brother by our given names. There were no nicknames growing up. It was rather frustrating at times because my name is so long and is commonly shortened to a variety of nicknames. Plus I had friends who were allowed to have nicknames even if it was just amongst us friends. Even with just my friends calling me something different it was frowned upon. My brother’s name is sorta similar in that it is long and does have 1 common nickname. I wonder if there was something that turned them off to nicknames or if there is some other meaning behind this.
I actually had to pick a nickname last year. You see trivia on the NTN network only allows you to have a screen name of up to 6 letters. So I created a nickname I grew to like. I have actually started to use it as my pen name here and in an often visited message board I have started to see people refer to me by it. It actually is kind a cool to me since I’ve never had a nickname before to have people calling me by it.
So is anyone else out there going through the same thing? Never having a nickname but wishing that they did? Have you created one as you have gotten older?
