An unpopular opinion…

I have a highly unpopular opinion I need to let out.  I think that Karyn Bosnak, of Save Karyn infamy, has become the McDonalds’ coffee suit of the personal finance world.  That is, I think that Karyn has had a lot of blame pointed at her, when I really don’t think what she did was that evil.  Racking up thousands of dollars in consumer debt?  Financially stupid as all get out, but the fat that she set up a donation site?  If she declared bankrupcy, the cost would be eventually passed on to all consumers.  By internet panhandling, she did essentially the same thing-but showed more ingenuity that eventually led to a new career for her.

Today, Boston Gal linked to the story of Kelli Space, a college graduate who is unemployed with $200,000 in student loan debt.  She started a website to solicit donations to pay this back, which was featured on Gawker.  Honestly, I’m not terribly sympathetic to Kelli-I’ve discussed my feelings on the short-sightedness of student loans before here.  Also, $200,000 seems like an incredibly stupid amount of student loan debt to get in-I do think that any parent, college educated or not, who allows their kid to get that deeply in debt for a BA should be ashamed of themselves.
