The generic trap, revisted…

by hedy on November 27, 2009

I, like most people, have some staples that I try to stock up on when it’s on sale.  A big one for me is my contact solution, CIBA Vision Clear Care No Rub Cleaning & Disinfecting Solution Value Pack – 12 Oz- Bottles, Pack of 2.  I usually stock up when I can stack a CVS cash register tape (AKA a CRT coupon) with an Extra Care bucks (ECB promotion).  However, Tuesday night I went to pour my contact solution, and my bottle fizzed out.  I checked on my etagere-none!  My cabinet-none!  My room-you guessed it-none!  I realized I hadn’t gotten any in about six months.

So, I headed to CVS today.  I was a little excited, as I had heard from a fellow blogger that CVS was now making a generic version of the CIBA vision solution. (I’m a fan of all the new generic items CVS has been selling, myself).  I found both items in the Eye Care aisle-the Clear Care Contact Solution was there for $9.49 a bottle, and the CVS version was $7.49-no brainer, right?  BUT, I had a $3 coupon for the brand, making it essentially $1 cheaper than the CVS brand.

While checking out, I came across a new item I hadn’t seen before, the Green Bag Tag.  The Green Bag Tag seems to be CVS’ version of the offer that many grocery stores have.  Essentially, every time you use a reusable bag at CVS, you have them scan this tag.  You earn $1 ECB on every 4th visit.  These tags retail for $.99-being the CVS and reusable bag addict I am, I bought one for myself and one for a stocking stuffer for my mother.

@Garretot-you are unsure if the CVS bag tag is true, or that brands can be cheaper than generics.

what a strange comment?
I agree with you that the generic brands that CVS has been rolling out seem to be on par with the brand names. I’ve been shopping at CVS more often than Walgreens lately because of that.

I have a green bag tag that I just got recently and already got one $1 EBC from it. I am on visit 7 now so I guess I will get my next $1 on Sunday.

I think the green bag tags promotion ends next year though…I have to double check, but I think I saw something like June 2010?
