So what does a vegetarian eat on Thanksgiving, Anyway?

by hedy on November 23, 2008

Not really money related (well, sort of), but I’m a vegetarian (ovo-lacto-I eat eggs and milk).  This time of year, with the holiday colloquially known as Turkey Day on the horizon, what a vegetarian eats is of question.  The first few years I was a vegetarian, I stuck with the traditional Tofurkey-it’s fairly tasty, and easy enough to pop in the oven along with the stuffing or roast vegetables.  Tofurkey comes in many varities-we’ve had the big feast, and although the cranberry dumplings are a marked improvement over the tempeh drumsticks that used to come with them, I find it to be too much food.  I then switched to the roast (incidentally, yesterday at Whole Foods just the roast was $10.99, whereas the Trader Joe’s next door had the roast plus gravy (with Tofurkey “giblets”) for $9.99.  This was a marked imprivement.  Once Quorn was ok’d for sale in the US, we tried the roast and found it even easier-just pop it in an oven bag* with olive oil and herbs and roast.  It was much more compact that the Tofurkey, and the size made it easier to fit in the oven.  Then came the fateful Thanksgiving when we decided to take it to my brother’s house-only to open it and find it was moldy.  Yipes!  We had veggie dogs that year.  Last year we went back to the Tofurkey; however this year I read about a Celebration Roast and thought we might try it.  However, the Whole Foods we went to didn’t have them, so we got a Quorn roast (it’s easier to transport its leftovers). Just for the fun of it, I opened the box yesterday when we got home.  MOLDY!  So today we returned the Quorn roast and picked up a Celebration Roast-it’s refrigerated rather than frozen, so the cooking time is less.  I shall report back on how it is.  Incidentally, I much prefer Alton Brown’s Tart Cranberry Dipping Sauce over a false gravy.

*Except for the time I used a jumbo oven bag (hey, it was cheaper) and started an oven fire.  Oops.

I am not a vegetarian….but I stopped eating chicken and red meat. I get that question from people all the time. I do eat turkey but then I get the crazy questions all the time.

The celebration roast is good, a bit spicy. I haven’t tried the Tofurky yet, I wish I had known about the TJ sale! I was in that area just yesterday.

I also have found a bunch of yummy recipes that are vegetarian, and I haven’t heard a single peep from the carnivores in my house!
