One of the main things I was concerned with before I even considered leaving my job was health insurance. I poked around my current job’s benefits book, and found out that my benefits end the day I leave my job. Being the fastidious person I am, I’d checked with my new job and found out that my benefits would not start until the first of the month after I started my job. So, as going without health insurance is not an option for me, I looked into COBRA. I know a lot of people’s kneejerk reaction is that COBRA is expensive, but keep in mind it’s what you pay+your company pays and a 2% administrative fee. Frankly, I think there’d be less bellyaching over insurance premiums if people knew what their employers were paying. Anyway, I plan on getting COBRA for my health insurance, only getting Dental cobra if I need it (I have 60 days from my last day of work to enroll-my dental coverage will have started then, but I can enroll if anything horrible happens. I’m debating on vision-my new job carries no vision coverage, and COBRA is less than the value of my annual exam and contact benefits. I think I’m going to look into vision discount programs first.

My recomendation for vision is to go self-pay if you have reasonable eye health and get check ups every two years and make glasses last longer than that. I recommend self-pay even more if you don’t need corrective eye-wear..
Lola,
That’s not a bad idea. I wear contacts, so an annual exam is a must. I could make self-pay work for me, but I’ve always had vision coverage.
