So, I finally saw the Sex and the City movie this weekend-side-effect of no longer suffering Netflix guilt. I was pretty underwhelmed at some key plot points, but there were definately some money stuff that bugged me. Before I get started-I must comment that I feel that SATC as a whole has created one of the most prevailing (IMO) beliefs regarding our generation-that we fritter our money away on crap like designer purses while neglecting our finances. In my opion, this came to a head a year or so ago when I saw an ad Key Bank had taken out in Jane-showing a house of shoe boxes and a comment that wasn’t a downpayment. This ad was presumably echoing the famous scene where Carrie realizes the downpayment for her co-op is in all of her pairs of designer shoes. The first really big ick, for me, was when Carrie and Big are looking at apartments, and when she says the penthouse is out of their price range, Big says “I got it.” While Carrie seems weird about it, she seems content to let Big “get it.” Given that Carrie can afford an assistant, I find it a little odd she doesn’t seem to be interested in the cost of the penthouse or offering some money. When everyone hops off to Mexico, there’s no talk of what the last minute plane tickets cost, nor what Carrie lost in the non-refundable deposit. And Louise is so hard up she shares a one bedroom with four other girls, yet can afford a Bag, Borrow or Steal membership? That’s $10 a month, plus rental fees-a Louis Vuitton on the site runs $295 a month. Not only is that a boatload of money, but it’s kind of like a car,you can lease it for less, but you get nothing at the end.
How about you? Any thoughts?

Sex and the City was ruined for me when I realize people thought the characters were like real people and better yet, perhaps good examples.

In terms of finances, Carrie is one of the most irresponsible people with money ever. Remember how she yelled at Charlotte for not offering a loan to her? I really wish that they would’ve shown Carrie scaling back and paying for that stuff.

I honestly don’t mind a little fantasy, but my problem has always been that if they’re going to incorporate real world stuff, like money issues, they should handle it better.

Thats the part that bothered me-either live in a happy world with no money issues, or flesh it out.
