Given how online shopping has grown I’m amazed at how often people don’t think to protect themselves. You not only need to worry about protecting your personal information, but also to protect yourself in case a transaction goes badly.
A few tips to help you avoid fraud and security issues:
- confirm the retailer’s delivery and return policy prior to making a purchase.
- keep a record of your transactions, either by keeping your email confirmations or by writing down the confirmation numbers given by the merchant. This is especially useful when something does not arrive as ordered.
- never give your user name or password to anyone (yes including your best friend)
- never give your credit card number unless you have initiated the transaction and never in response to an unsolicitated offer. Along with this, never respond to an email asking your for personal or account information, the people who need it already have it.
- review your statements closely to ensure all charges are valid. It is a good idea to do this several times a week if you use your card alot. This will help you spot trouble early.
- don’t send payment information (credit card numbers or bank information) by regular email
- it is a good idea to make sure that your internet browser is set for secure transmission of data. There will be a closed padlock symbol on the bottom right of your screen and the address line will begin with https.
