Have you ever had a churro? They are sort of like an elongated doughnut covered in sugar and are often available from street vendors. Many visitors to Disneyland and Disney World become addicted to the sweet treat and have been known to search the parks for a vendor.
Well, if you are one of those people, now you can make your own! They take a little work but they are worth it.
Churros
1 ½ cups of water
1 tbsp granulated sugar
½ tsp salt
1 ¾ cups flour
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 tsp baking powder
Oil for deep-frying (canola, safflower or vegetable)
In saucepan, bring water sugar and salt to boil over medium-high heat. Stir in flour all at once. Cook, stirring until dough forms ball and thin film forms on bottom of pan (3 to 5 minutes)
Transfer to stand mixer with paddle attachment and beat for 30 seconds to cool slightly. On medium speed, beat in eggs until soft dough forms (2 minutes)
Fit piping bag with ½ inch star tip. Pipe 6 inch lengths of dough onto lightly floured surface.
In a wide shallow sauce pan, heat 2 inches of oil until it reaches 375 degrees (it is a good idea to use a deep-fryer thermometer for this step).
Fry churros 3 at a time and turning once, until golden brown and puffed (4 to 5 minutes).
Remove with tongs and drain on paper towels.
Topping:
½ cup granulated sugar
¼ tsp cinnamon
Mix together in a shallow dish. While churros are still hot roll in sugar mix.
Makes about 18 churros.
To go with your churros, try Mexican Hot Chocolate
In a double boiler melt 4 oz of unsweetened chopped chocolate (or chips)
In sauce pan combine 4 cups milk, ½ cup sugar, ½ tsp cinnamon, pinch salt, and melted chocolate. Heat over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, whisking until smooth and hot. Stir in ½ tsp vanilla and dash almond extract. Whisk vigorously until foam forms. Serve immediately.

Have you made these yet? Was it messy or hard? Did they turn out well? My son would flip if I made these!

I’ve eaten them, but haven’t tried to make them myself. I checked with my friend and she said they were about as messy as deep-frying anything. Let me know if you give them a try.

Oh my goodness! These look so good! They are just about my favorite thing at Disney. I’m going to have to talk Angie into coming over and trying these out with me.

I’ve never tried one but it looks like it would be a tasty treat and semi-easy to tackle one weekend.
