Once you have stitches on the needle (cast on), you have to start the actual knitting. The first stitch you need to learn is called the Knit Stitch and is abbreviated in patters with a letter k.
To start, you need the needle with the stitches on it in your left hand. Keep the working yarn behind the needles, and insert the right needle into the first stitch, going front to back and under the left needle.
Using your right hand (you can use your index finger to control the tension of the yarn with a half loop), wrap the working yarn counter-clockwise around the right needle (under and over the point).
Draw the working yarn through the stitch with the right needle. In other words, pull the right needle back just enough to slip underneath the left needle, and pull the new stitch along with it, through the old stitch on the left needle.
Slip the old stitch off the left needle. The new stitch should now be entirely on the right needle. This completes one knit stitch. Repeat until all stitches are on the right needle. This completes your first row of knit stitches.
Don’t worry if you feel clumsy and awkward, this is normal. Your stitches will probably uneven and either too loose or too tight. As you practice your stitches will become more even and you will feel less clumsy.
To knit the next row, turn the right needle around and hold it in the left hand. Move the free needle to the right hand, and work a row of stitches in the same way as the first.
When you have knit every row, you have created a pattern called the garter stitch, which looks the same on both the front and the back.
Here is a video from Revver that will hopefully help you see what I’ve been talking about. Remember that new skills take practice so persevere and you will get it!
