Hopefully along the way you have changed your thinking about your finances. Know how much money is coming in and where your money is going. Delay purchases until you can pay without financing or have a good plan for repaying the debt. Consider everything you are going to buy and whether you truly need it or just want it. Explore the community around you for alternatives when it comes to clothing, entertainment and income. Use your credit cards for temporary charges only. Have a plan for windfalls and emergencies. And most important always know where you are going.
So once you are debt free, have paid for school, taken that trip, bought that house or whatever your original goal was, where do you go from there? You move on to another short term goal as well as some long range planning. Too many people fail to plan for the future. If you have kids are you going to pay for their college expenses? Are you planning to retire? There will always be a goal to work towards and that should keep you on track as you map your financial path.
