How Sports Impact My Mood

November 18th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I don’t really play sports, but I love to watch. In particular, I am a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, I consider myself to be a reasonably normal, rational person. (Others might disagree.) But when I watch the Steelers, I become a CRAZY person! Not just my actions during the game, but how I respond afterward.

Take last weekend. I was lucky enough to be given tickets to see a game at Heinz Field. The Steelers beat the Browns in a very close game. I was thrilled! I was on such a high the entire 6 hour drive back from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis. I even had a hard time getting to sleep that night!

Today was a different story. Today my beloved Steelers lost in overtime. I was so angry that I was snapping at my kids about not drinking their hot chocolate. I was in what one might call a “funk” that actually talk me a couple of hours to get over.

It makes me wonder how it is that we can get so involved in sports events. How can the entire mood of my day be completely changed by whether a team on which no one I even know wins a game?

The good news for my family is that the Steelers do not play again until next Sunday. The bad news is that they play the Patriots.

It is hard not to get emotionally invested in your team. I find that close games can be exhausting because you are riding an emotional roller coaster! If you are like me you also feel like if you don’t watch (or wear that lucky shirt) you will somehow have impacted the outcome of the game.

I guess it runs in the family. Like mother like daughter.
