My Home “Office”

November 16th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Working from home for the last 10 years, I have always had a dedicated home office. A room with a door that has a real desk (albeit cheap), a roller chair, filing cabinets, etc.

And yet, I go through phases where I work for days on end in any room in the house EXCEPT my home office.

This week, my room of choice has been the family room. We bought a new leather couch and I have been breaking it in, so to speak. What I like about this new “office” is that I can sit in front of our new fake fireplace (one of those kind where you just flip a switch and it gets hot and looks sort of like a real fire).

When we built this house over the last 9 months, we planned for me to be able to work anywhere in the house. We put floor outlets in where the couch would go so that I could plug in the laptop. Network jacks in every room despite the fact that we have a wireless network.

The only problem with working in the family room is that it is next to the kitchen…where all of the food happens to be. Makes it hard not to want to eat all day when you smell the pot roast in the crockpot.

I’ll probably stay here in the family room all weekend now so I can work while the family watches movies, plays games, etc. We’ll see if I make it back into the real office on Monday!
