What is with guys and fast cars?

July 6th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Don’t shoot me….I know girls like cars too. But you’ll have to forgive me if I go off on a tangent here. I just spent 6 full hours at work listening to a couple of guys worshiping their cars.

Oh, ’scuse me. They aren’t just any old cars, but fast cars. And not just any old fast car would do apparently. These boys were talking the language of the Corvette. Now, I’ve known a few grease monkeys in my day, heck, one of them was a girl! It seemed like every single one of them had a penchant for Vettes or pickups. Is there some kind of private club or something?

Today the guys were extolling the virtues of this old (ahem…it’s vintage, so I’m told) beat up corvette in the parking lot. My buddy at work is all of 19, and going to tech school for, what else, car mechanics. His “ultimate dream” has always been to buy a heap Vette, and restore it to it’s original beauty.

So apparently he bought this heap at auction, paid $350 for it (I did call it a heap, didn’t I!)
and has been slowly turning it back into a show car. He is always babbling about timers and belts, original leather seating, rims and wheels. I was amused to learn that these Vette guys put a lot of stock in authentic corvette wheels. There are even sites like http://www.corvetteguys.com/corvette-wheels-tires.html that specialize in tires for corvette enthusiasts! Hmmm…I’ll have to turn B onto that site! I’m sure it will make his day.

I certainly don’t mean to trivialize his passion. I have passions of my own, and I think everyone should have at least one big passion in their lives. I just get a little cross eyed listening to all the funny little details day in and day out. I guess I’m just not that into cars!

Anyway, thanks for putting up with this. I needed to get it off my chest, and quite possibly, bug the hell out of someone else with all this car talk. Did it work?

I find that behavior more endearing in 19 year olds than old guys with mid-life crises, myself.
