Technology Blows Me Away

by nicholmom3 on July 24, 2008

This topic is a bit of a deviation from my normal posts, yet it is one that caught my eye and means quite a bit personally. It’s also a fairly controversial topic, and one that is frequently discussed in all manner of ways.

I am speaking of stem cell research. My husband is a Brittle Type 1 Diabetic, and I have a few family members that have other diseases such as MS and Parkinsons. Needless to say, this topic has come up in conversation more than a few times, and to put it out there, I am a proponant of stem cell research. The very idea that someone could find a cure for the disease that has changed and shaped my family’s life is mind blowing and has the power to get me down on my knees!

Now, most people don’t have a problem with the research/deadly disease ending aspect, but more where those precious stem cells come from. I’m not going to turn this post into a wild debate about discarded fetuses and in vitro egg donations, but rather point out an incredible option I’ve only just learned about. You see, with both my children, we looked into the option of donating or storing the cord blood from the births. Both times, we hit major road blocks, one being the insane costs of such use, and another was that our hospital did not allow the collection of the cord blood for donation purposes. I failed to see the difference, but that was that.

What is sad about it all is that those precious opportunities are now lost to us. We are not planning on more children, so those choices were significant. I’ve thought many times on if we made the right choice. Now, thanks to modern science, I again have the opportunity to make a difference. A company by the name of C’elle has introduced a kit that allows women to collect their menstral fluids and preserve the stem cells located within.

Alright, I just heard the collective EWWWWW.  Absolutely nothing about the menstral process is a good time, but at last something extremely positive can come from the dreaded Aunt Flo visit. You can read C’elle Client Testimonials
and see the collection kit for yourselves!

While I am lucky enough to avoid Aunt Flo for the time being, this opportunity almost makes me wish for a drop in! (I did say almost…my time will come again.)
The cost for the kit is a tad out of my everyday budget, but it isn’t out of reach. Not to mention C’elle is running a two for one special, allowing women to collect more blood, or introduce another women to the potential.

I am thrilled beyond words (erm…is that even possible for me?) that such an option has become a reality. Just THINK about what this could mean for our future? I’m sure someone will come up with a moral or ethical reason why we shouldn’t use these cells, but until they can convince me, I’m saving my pennies for a kit!
