Quick and Easy Solutions for Night Time Grinders

by nicholmom3 on December 16, 2009

If you are like so many other people right now, the current economic conditions are giving you more than a few headaches. Chances are you have noticed a few changes to your oral health as well.

I work in a dental office, and one of the most common complaints we are seeing is an increase in teeth sensitivity, mainly caused by clenching and grinding throughout the night.
There are a few things you can do to help mitigate the damage caused by grinding, and we generally recommend starting with the easiest and cheapest method first. Obviously if you are experiencing sensitivity to cold foods and drinks, using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth can help, as will using a fluoride rinse every day. We also recommend using a dental mouth guardto reduce the effects of grinding to your teeth and jaw muscles. A custom mouth guard made by your dentist generally works best, but it is a good idea to start off with a store bought one if you are unsure if you can get used to sleeping with an appliance, and is essential if you are in the middle of dental work, such as getting multiple fillings, crowns or bridgework, as all of these can change the shape of your teeth and that wonderful mouthguard will no longer fit. I have a custom made mouthguard, so I was curious to see how the mouthguards from Dentek would compare. Check out the video below for my review. To summarize, I thought this product was a great fit for those who are looking for a TEMPORARY and inexpensive solution. I don’t think these mouth guards would work well long term for heavy grinders, and they are close to, but not quite as comfortable as custom made appliances. Still, these are a fantastic product to start with, or to even have as a backup, say in case your dog decides to find a new ( very expensive) chew toy.

This review is a result of a feedback campaign by DenTek Oral Care, Inc. The recipients were asked to give their honest opinion about the product they received. Good reviews were not incentivized and poor reviews will not be censored for their opinion of the product.

I am curious, if this is the temporary fix, what are the long term terminate solutions to something like this?

Thanks for your question! In this instance I used the word temporary in reference only to this brand night guard. Each night guard is only good for 6 months, so it is indeed a temporary solution.
Since every patient is different in their needs, a visit to their dentist can help them sort out the best solutions for grinding and clenching issues!
