NewsFlash: Senator Kennedy has Brain Tumor.

by nicholmom3 on May 20, 2008

It’s a sad day in Massachusetts. It is being reported that Sen. Edward Kennedy has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. He’s been in Mass General Hospital since suffering a seizure on Saturday.

While some may not care for the Senator’s politics, it is apparent (to me at least) that he has been instrumental in making great changes in this country, and he truly cares for those at a disadvantage. I have been personally affected by a decision he made many years ago, and it is one that I will always be grateful for. Senator Kennedy was instrumental in helping my two mentally disabled aunts get into separate semi-independant housing. My grandfather was unable to care for their needs by himself after my grandmother died, and the only other option at the time was an institution. Senator Kennedy, having a family member with mental retardation himself, played a huge role in pushing for an alternative to hospitals for those who are healthy, but unable to care for themselves. If it weren’t for his help and passion, my two aunts would surely have wasted away in some creepy hospital somewhere, treated like 3rd class citizens. Instead they have flourished in environments dedicated to preserving their quality of life.

They have held volunteer jobs, gone to social functions, and most importantly, have had many opportunities to visit each other and be active in each other’s lives, which probably would not have been possible in an institution.

So while there are aspects of Senator Kennedy’s politics and life that I have not agreed with, he still holds a dear place in my and my family’s heart. Best wishes and speedy recovery are sent your way Senator!
