As part of my effort to contribute to a greener earth, I’ve been consciencious about the choices I make when decorating our home. Before, I would just pick up any old cute thing that was on sale, caring little if it had lead paint, was made from eco-friendly wood, or if it was locally made.
Now, that isn’t the case at all. I first try to buy items that are produced within 100 miles from my home. I also pay attention to the materials, and will pay more for something that is eco-friendly. Mind you, I refuse to be taken for a ride, I’m still a discount girl at heart!
I’ve often thought that local decor items meant I had to settle for hand hewn, country styles, but I’ve found wonderfully modern furniture and accessories for great prices in many places nearby. In fact, I’ve found that you can be eco-conscious no matter what your personal style may be.
Some ways you can reduce your decorating footprint (teehee…is that a new phrase?) are choosing locally made products over those produced in other countries (less energy to ship + more jobs at home….everyone wins!), choosing sustainable woods like bamboo and eucalyptus, and using natural alternatives to clean and decorate with. The more natural product you bring into your home, the healthier everyone will be!
Do you have any eco-friendly tips? Please share!
