Brazil-US Ties? Fuhgettaboutit

What a rollercoaster. I’ve been following the story of the Goldman’s for the past few months with increasing interest. Yesterday I thought that victory was finally with the father. I was so happy for this man I have never met, yet felt such a connection to. Here is a caring father, who rightfully wanted his boy back home. My elation, as hos, was short lived as I read this morning’s headline that the Brazilian Supreme court blocked his leaving the country again.

Their reasoning is that the 9 year old boy deserved to decide where he wanted to live. While I agree he should be able to talk about it, 9 years old is far to young to have that kind of decision heaped on his shoulders! First off, the child was taken by his mother to Brazil years ago, and kept there. Then his mother passed away, and he should have been returned immediately to his father. The courts have been ridiculous, allowing instead the boy’s stepfather of 3 years to raise him over his real father!! Amazing.

And to put icing on the cake, the Brazilian government has largely ignored their signed role in the Hague Abduction Treaty, and has the NERVE to accuse the U.S. government of putting pressure on them to uphold the agreement!!! What is the point of signing a treaty if you are going to ignore it? I would bet if the situation were reversed, and the boy was in the US with Brazil trying to get him back, Brazilian officials would be crying foul.

David Goldman, I hope you get your son back, and soon. The boy deserves the truth, and a loving parent to raise him. I believe you are that parent, and I pray this will be resolved quickly, and without any more foolishness.
