Online Degrees - Worthy of Pursuing?

April 1st, 2008 · 2 Comments

As a single full time working mom, I find that while I would love to continue my education and pick up a master’s degree, I can not imagine when I would find the time to do so.  Between my after school tutorials and practices and both of my girls activities, I would simply not have any evening that I could easily travel to our local university. Even if I managed to do this, I can not imagine when I would find the time to study and do homework assignments. Every year I think this summer, but then I realize that the next year will not be any less eventful and therefore I put it off one more year.  My current goal is next summer. (Of course last summer, my goal was this summer.)

Recently I’ve come to ponder an online degree. I am not sure if I could get the degree I want online though, and I would be concerned that it would not be taken seriously and thus not allow me any other job opportunities. I’ve heard so much about “fake degrees.” And I remember years ago hearing claims that the degrees that were somewhat valid, did not offer the same extensive curriculum and that prospective employers were not really impressed by them.

A new blog is entering the online world which focuses on online education, and I am going to be watching it closely for the next few months. The first blog was posted on the 27th, and I’m looking forward to many future posts. What I really enjoyed was that this first post is a video. The world of video blogs is new to me, but I am hoping that it will continue to offer more videos as time passes. Watching and learning about opportunities is a lot more interesting (and therefore I’ll continue to check it out) than reading lengthy posts.

The blog is in its beginning stages with posts and design, but it is off to a great start and I will be watching it for future posts.

I have been back and forth about going back to school. Partly because of time, and partly because the thought of going back to school exhausts me! It has been SOOO long since I have been in school….It is something I need to make a decision on. Being on the fence either way is doing me no good….

I have the same problem Angela. At times I think I need to make the time and just go back period. Then I think about how busy and potentially stressful that would make me and wonder if it would really be worth it.
