Cleaning Resource of the Year?!?

March 2nd, 2008 · 6 Comments

I had an entirely different plan for a post today, but after my experience just moments ago, I had to share this with anyone who hates to clean and wants the “easiest way out.”  I should probably preface by saying that while I don’t particularly enjoy cleaning at any time, I absolutely HATE cleaning the bathroom, and I do procrastinate until it’s in an embarrasing state (the point I noticed this morning).

I began by using my normal household cleaner, and it just was not cutting through the grime I had let build up on the shower and tub. So while I thought very bad thoughts about the cleaner and myself for letting it get to this point, I went back to the kitchen and found the ammonia. I usually save this for only the worst jobs as I can’t stand the smell, but I’ve never been able to deny the great job it does.  You can only imagine my frustration when it was not removing everything either.

In desperation, I headed back to the kitchen to dig in the cabinet under the shelf for a third attempt at finding something that would remove the last of the scum (is that what it’s called?) on my shower walls.  This is when I noticed a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I have no idea where this came from so I’m left to believe it must have been a free sample I received at some point. :)

I read the box and decided, “Why not?!” so I returned the bathroom and was AMAZED. My shower walls were turning white again INSTANTLY!  I couldn’t believe it, and it was so easy!  I have to admit that I’ve almost worn this thing down to nothing already as after I finished the shower, I moved on to counters and sinks in both the bathroom and kitchen, and I even used it on a couple trouble spots on the floors. In almost every case, it has made the surfaces look almost new again. What can I say? I’m sold and will be purchasing some more Mr. Clean Magic Erasers the next time I go shopping.

Oh Yeah! Love the Big Bald Man! I have been saying for a long time that I should just buy stock in the company.
Beware of imitations though, I have never found one that works as well as the original.

Man I wish I could find something to take care of the mold growing on the caulking of my shower. I have tried everything including cutting it out and trying again. Nothing stops it. Any suggestions? (tried the eraser already as well as the clorox bleach pen which is excellent on everything else except the caulking).

I wish I could figure that one out too. That’s the only thing I couldn’t clean either. If anyone knows, I hope they share with us. I have decided that this summer we will either be looking for a new house or doing some serious renovating/adding on to ours. As far as temporary fixes, I have totally scraped out all the caulking I could see and replaced. It comes back, but it does look good for a while. When we tear out my bathroom, I will be replacing with a one piece tub and surround. That’s what my dad finally did.

Magic Eraser also has a floor mop that does an amazing job.

For the caulking - for quick and easy, put one of the bleaching white toothpastes on in the morning, and clean it up at night. Or your own mixture would be a heavy paste of baking soda and peroxide. (Vinegar may work too - think jr. high science fair fizz project)

a grungy toothbrush can get into the small corners.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one with that problem then. I will definetly share if I come up with an idea on how to keep it clean.
