Beach Wedding Ideas

by +Tricia on July 25, 2011

Beach weddings have got to be some of the romantic around, from so many points of view. The ocean is seemingly endless, stretching out over the horizon like your love for one another. The sand beneath your feet – if you’re going barefoot – signifying your connection with the earth and all of the elements in it.

Beach weddings are not only beautiful, they mean a lot from a symbolic perspective. Perhaps that is why so many couples are choosing to go with a watery ceremony over a church-bound one. So how can you make your beach wedding unique? Read on…

The Total Theme Wedding

Accent your wedding from top to tail with gorgeous sea-style accessories. If you can, pick out one or two important elements (like starfish and coral, for example) and carry them through the entire nuptials. Three ideas for really making the event personal are:

Create your own wedding invitations, attaching pearls or shells to really give them a nautical feel.
Pearls and shells are also lovely in the hair. Shiny starfish accessories can set off a beautiful “do” perfectly.
Go for a dress with a beach theme – tiny cowry shells make unusual and special little accents on a gown.

Time it right and have the reception at the beach too

If you have the wedding at the height of the day – say twelve or one o’clock, you might be able to get away with having the entire celebration there, highlighting the night with lawn candles stuck into the sand. It’s a good idea to make the reception area a fenced-in one, as little ones will need to be kept an eye on. Nevertheless, a beach reception is certainly possible and very atmospheric.

Do a destination wedding

Take only your nearest and dearest and have a large reception when you get back. This is a more affordable way to have a true Caribbean wedding, for example, if that’s what you’re aiming for. You can have a blissful, peaceful ceremony in the sand without having to worry about entertaining hundreds. The reception can be much more laid back and there’ll be plenty of stories to tell about the honeymoon!

If you can’t get to a beach, bring the beach to you

Whether it be a lake, a river or even your back yard, there’s no reason why you can’t bring the beach to you if you’re not able to reach the sea. Some lakes have beaches attached to them and a few – like lake Michigan and some of the other large inland bodies of water – are so big that the sense of eternity can be recreated pretty easily. Weddings held at such a spot can be absolutely incredible. The advantage is that many scenic places have hotels close by, which can then be used for receptions.

Whatever you choose to do, have fun with it and don’t let stress overcome you in the run up to your life changing beach wedding. Get plenty of rest and let inspiration do the rest!
